The Art of Slow Spinning

Experience the unique texture of Garabou, a traditional Japanese spinning method dating back to the 19th century. These ankle-length socks offer a soft, voluminous feel that pairs perfectly with sneakers, sandals, or as cozy room socks.

Why it’s special:

- The "Garabou" Heritage
Originally invented in the Edo period, this method mimics hand-spinning. We use organic cotton "fallen fibers" (reclaimed during the spinning process) to create a sustainable, richly textured yarn.

- Vintage Craftsmanship
Because the yarn varies in thickness, it cannot be knitted on modern machines. These socks are crafted using customized 40-year-old knitting machines—a proprietary technique unique to Yamaya.

- One-of-a-Kind Texture
Like a hand-knit piece, each pair has slight variations in length and weave. This organic unevenness is the hallmark of authentic Garabou.

The Indigo version features a beautiful blend of genuine indigo-dyed yarn and natural Garabou cotton, creating a refreshing, multi-toned finish.

What is Garabou?

Garabou is a spinning method that was developed uniquely in Japan and was invented during the Edo period as a way to mechanically spin Japanese cotton, which has short fiber length.
It is made from organic cotton waste and features a rich texture that resembles hand-spun fabric.

Garabou material cannot be knitted on normal knitting machines because its thickness is uneven.
We have modified a sock knitting machine that is over 40 years old (which was designed to be able to knit a wide range of yarn thicknesses because spinning methods were still immature) to create a special knitting machine for these socks.
This is a technique unique to Yamaya.

*Due to the nature of the yarn, Garabou products vary in length and size. Please understand that this is also an individual characteristic of the yarn. We hope you will enjoy the unevenness of the handmade feel, which feels almost one-of-a-kind, as a characteristic of Garabou spinning.

CARE
・Use a maximum water temperature of 30°C, and if using a washing machine, place the socks in a laundry net. (Hand washing is recommended for natural materials such as animal hair, silk, and linen.) When placing the socks in a laundry net, turning them inside out will help remove dirt such as sweat and sebum.
・It is best to hang dry in the shade.
・It is best to avoid using bleach, a dryer, dry cleaning, or ironing (as these can cause discoloration and loss of shape).
